How to extend your study permit in Canada
1. Gather required documents
The most important documents to have ready for submission are:
Proof of acceptance at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Proof of financial support while studying in Canada
Letter of Enrollment/Acceptance
Photocopies of other documents as required such as passport, digital photo, etc.
Make sure to review the document checklist that the Canadian Government provides to find every document that is required to submit for the application.
In case there are any remaining documents that Acsenda could provide, check the tuition and fees section on the Acsenda website.
If the documents are not in English or French, they need to have an official translation and an affidavit from the person who officially translates the document; for instance, some of the certified translators in British Columbia are:
2. Create an IRCC account on the IRCC website (if you are applying online)
It is important to have a personal account on the IRCC website to start an application, in order to receive notifications, submit and pay for it and check the status.
After creating an account, there will be a list of questions that will generate the application forms and documents, and at that point, it is important to continue reviewing the document checklist and see what else is needed before submitting the application.
3. Complete the application form and submit all the documents
One of the most important documents to fill out for the study permit extension is the ‘Application to change conditions, extend my stay or remain in Canada as a student [IMM5790] form’ which requires you to check that all the information is correct because it can affect the result of the application.
The [IMM5790] form can be opened automatically through a PDF viewer, however in case it does not open, the computer needs to have Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to open the form with its contents. At the same time, it is important to ensure that all the documents are submitted and everything is correct.
4. Pay the fees
All fees must be submitted along with the application and the cost of them will be:
ApplicationCAN study permit (including extensions): $150.00
Biometrics (if applicable): $85.00
5. Submit the application
Afterwards, when everything is completed, submit the application and check your IRCC account regularly to see if there are status updates. Moreover, if the study permit is approved, then the IRCC will mail the new study permit extension to your mailing address.
In conclusion, the study permit extension is a time-consuming process.
Nonetheless, it is important to be careful before submitting every document, and take into consideration the guidelines and instructions that the Government of Canada website provides.
